Her message is blunt: “No more foreign-born Members of Congress or federal judges.”
But that proposal raises a much bigger question about what American citizenship is supposed to mean.
Millions of Americans were born in other countries, later became U.S. citizens, built their lives here, paid taxes, served their communities, and contributed to the country. Under this idea, they could still be treated as permanently less eligible for public service simply because of where they happened to be born.
America has long presented itself as a nation where citizenship—not birthplace, ethnicity, or family origin—defines political belonging.
If someone becomes an American citizen, follows the law, and earns the trust of voters, why should their birthplace automatically disqualify them from Congress?
And when it comes to judges, shouldn’t qualifications, experience, and commitment to the Constitution matter more than the country listed on a birth certificate?
This debate is ultimately about whether naturalized citizens are truly equal citizens—or only equal up to a point.
