JD Vance is blaming America’s $40 trillion national debt on Joe Biden and Kamala Harris, saying they are responsible for the massive financial burden facing the country.
But that argument leaves out a major part of the story.
Around $12 trillion—roughly 30% of today’s entire $40 trillion national debt—was added during the two Trump administrations. That is not a minor number that can simply be ignored while placing all the blame on Biden and Harris.
If Vance wants to talk seriously about America’s debt crisis, then the spending and borrowing that happened under Trump also have to be part of the conversation.
You cannot blame one administration for the entire national debt while pretending trillions added under your own side somehow do not count.
That is why critics are calling Vance’s statement misleading.
The debt did not begin with Biden and Harris, and it certainly did not grow under only one political party.
When the numbers tell a much bigger story, blaming everything on your opponents starts looking less like accountability and more like political spin.
