Russian President Vladimir Putin has announced that Russia plans to deploy the RS-28 Sarmat nuclear missile system before the end of 2026, describing it as the “most powerful missile in the world.” The announcement came after what Russian officials called a successful test launch of the intercontinental ballistic missile, known in the West by the nickname “Satan II.”

According to the Kremlin, the Sarmat missile is designed to replace older Soviet-era missile systems and strengthen Russia’s strategic nuclear forces. Putin claimed the weapon has an extremely long range and the ability to carry multiple nuclear warheads while evading modern missile defense systems. Russian military commanders say the missile will significantly increase the country’s nuclear deterrence capabilities.

The announcement comes at a time of heightened global tensions surrounding the war in Ukraine and worsening relations between Russia and NATO countries. Since the conflict began in 2022, Moscow has repeatedly highlighted its nuclear arsenal as a warning against deeper Western involvement in the war. Analysts say the latest statement is part of Russia’s broader effort to showcase military strength and maintain strategic pressure on its rivals.

Despite Russia’s confidence, some Western defense experts remain skeptical about the missile’s capabilities. The Sarmat program has faced years of delays and several reported testing failures before the latest launch. However, Russian officials insist the missile is now ready for operational deployment and will become a key part of the country’s nuclear modernization program.

The development has renewed international concerns about a possible new global arms race, especially after the expiration of major nuclear arms agreements between Russia and the United States. Security analysts warn that growing competition in advanced missile technology could further increase geopolitical instability in the coming years.
