Trump says Zelenskyy must stop striking Russian diesel infrastructure because the attacks are contributing to fuel shortages.
But where is the equally forceful demand for Vladimir Putin to stop bombing Ukrainian cities, apartment buildings and energy systems? Ukraine says it targets Russian refineries because oil revenue helps finance the invasion and because Moscow has repeatedly attacked Ukraine’s own energy infrastructure.
That does not mean every Ukrainian strike should escape scrutiny, especially when civilians or dangerous facilities could be placed at risk.
Yet focusing only on the consequences for Russian fuel supplies creates a glaring double standard.
Russia launched the full-scale invasion, continues occupying Ukrainian territory and keeps sending missiles and drones into populated areas.
Recent attacks have again killed and wounded civilians across Ukraine. If Trump genuinely wants peace, his pressure cannot flow in only one direction.
Asking Ukraine to exercise restraint while barely mentioning Russia’s continuing attacks is not balanced diplomacy.
Call on Zelenskyy to protect civilians and prevent global economic disruption if necessary, but also tell Putin clearly and publicly: stop attacking Ukrainian civilians, stop destroying their homes and end the invasion that created this crisis.
