BREAKING: President Donald Trump has fired all three remaining members of the U.S. Election Assistance Commission (EAC), leaving the independent federal agency without a single commissioner and unable to take official action.

The EAC was created by Congress after the 2000 election to help states administer elections, certify voting systems, distribute federal election funding, maintain the national mail voter registration form, and provide guidance to election officials.

Because the commission now has no members, it cannot conduct official business until new commissioners are nominated by the president and confirmed by the Senate. Under federal law, no more than two commissioners may belong to the same political party.

The move comes just days after the Supreme Court expanded presidential authority to remove leaders of independent federal agencies, and legal experts say the firings could become the first major test of whether that ruling also applies to bipartisan election commissions.

With the 2026 midterm election cycle already underway, the commission’s work is effectively frozen unless and until new commissioners are confirmed.
