Trump signed the order on August 28, 2026, at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston during a ceremony honoring the Artemis II astronauts.
The new academy is planned to be similar to major U.S. military academies such as West Point, the U.S. Naval Academy and the Air Force Academy.
But the Space Academy would have a wider purpose. The plan calls for a NASA-led federal academy that would teach technical skills, leadership, discipline and public service.
It could train people for jobs across the Space Force, NASA, other government agencies and the civilian space industry.
Trump said the United States needs to train an entire generation of skilled service members, engineers and civilian space workers as the country’s space programs continue to grow.
The academy is not open yet. Its exact structure still has to be worked out.
A new eight-member presidential commission will help design the academy. NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman will lead the commission, while NASA Deputy Administrator Matt Anderson will serve as its executive director.
The commission has 120 days to give Trump its recommendations. Those recommendations will cover the academy’s curriculum, admissions, leadership, location, service requirements for graduates and any legislation needed to create it.
Trump said the location would be chosen “very shortly,” but no location or opening date has been announced yet.
Right now, future Space Force officers generally receive their education through the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs.
Trump created the U.S. Space Force in 2019 during his first term. The new academy would give the growing space sector a dedicated institution for training military and civilian talent.
